About the Project

With the population of Fort McMurray growing, and the neighbouring settlements and camps developing with Alberta’s economy, the current landfill was having a tough time keeping up.

While another satellite landfill was located 60 kms north of Fort McMurray, to serve Fort McKay and other northern camps, the Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s landfill is only 8.5 kms south of Fort McMurray. Facing capacities over 90%, the landfill needed to be expanded drastically.

Working with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, LN is helping to ease the burden on the region while also supporting programs to capture emissions from the old landfill and use them as new sources of power.
